The main reason people aren't more generous is because we are in a deathmatch against everyone else (Because we force each other to earn a living). 
1. It wears us out
2. If we help others too much they will beat us in the death match

those are interesting observations from a worldview literacy perspective @prosocialise 

there is an inertia in the worldview
you are born into certain sacred beliefs, family and education make them even stronger, and later it is extremely hard to change

and do it on the fly

right now market-centered and human rights-centered dogmas and institutions still have a strong grip on our societies
as you said, we force each other and we wear each other out

the social inertia is strong
