A lot of top writers I've interviewed or worked with started for some reason not even close to making money. Many use some flavor of wanting to "increase their surface area of luck". Writing on the internet is a great way to meet new amazing people. Some write to clarify their thoughts. Some do it bc it's fun! Or they enjoy the craft & creative process. Some want to leave something behind, or to pass along learnings & insights to earlier versions of themself. Writing on the internet can be a vulnerable act, and it can be an absolute slog in the beginning when you don't have any audience. The writers that keep at it are usually motivated by something beyond money.

"Some want to leave something behind, or to pass along learnings & insights to earlier versions of themself" - so true. That’s exactly why I do artist interviews. It takes effort and research, but knowing their words will be out there, ready to inspire anyone who finds them, makes it all worth it, even without any financial rewards 🫶
