"why is farcaster's user growth slowing down, even reversing?" many people that $DEGEN and derivatives brought to the platform weren't users, they were locusts. they came, extracted what they wanted and left. some stayed and became valuable members, some were harmful. resources that could've been spent on improving the platform were redirected into battling all the negative side-effects. farcaster didn't thrive. it survived. don't get me wrong, i love these experiments β€” degen mindset is builder mindset β€” but if you're doubting farcaster based on naive data points, you're gonna have a bad time. maybe this is not the right place for you at this moment. and that's ok. however, if you accept we're in the early phases and there are still many roadblocks to overcome, so much left to build (and sunset too), and that it's you who can shape its future, you will be much happier. farcaster is what we make it to be.

I think for some of us who has been in the crypto world awhile have seen a lot of coming and goings, startups and flops and rug pulls.. and assholes raiding taking what they can get causing havoc and leaving .. and every time these companies try to stop people/bots it hurts the β€œlittle”people and the raiders get away with it laughing every time.. I would be happy to be proven wrong..

i don't believe this is ever going to change. there'll always be people taking advantage of others. and countermeasures that hurt honest users sadly too. scale is what makes this hard. that's why cozy corners and communities are so important for farcaster success. you may not survive "out there" as a little user, but you can thrive inside a little group, safe and guarded by strong borders (yes, borders are good) β€” whether it's a technical (token ownership, proof of something...) or purely cultural (bad actor ousted by people via ban or utter ignorance) obstacle.

I have never been a fan of gate keeping, but in this case I am. As long as it is easy to get in and easy to kick out and the managers of groups have a strong moral compass. You know why I stay, I think people should take a lesson out of your book. What you have created is awesome!!

I 90% agree with @ds8 here, and want to speak to his choir on the other 10%. *Some* borders are good, but not all gatekeeping methods are acceptable. I don't care for anyone's moral compass turning against my friends, people that look and sound vaguely like me, or people with less means to withstand force. I have observed two-faced malignancy from Daddy Merkle, and it is enabled by a complacent community. Saying on the record: the new channels allows people to build the range of communities we want to build. It's going to be more confusing and harder for many (who benefitted from being early), but can fertilize a diversity that hasn't been seen on Farcaster before. I sincerely hope they don't kill channels. Farcaster without channels is 99% Warpcast algo feed, with "discovery" done for you more opaquely and less accountably than Meta or Alphabet or X.

yes, i agree that not all gatekeeping is acceptable, but i believe this is market's problem to solve β€” as long as everyone has the ability to "build their own community".
