Crypto is a label stuck to a space that has too many finesses to be explained in just one sentence. That's my one sentence, usually followed by some talk about fraud, criminals, the underlying values of self custody, access to value exchange and immutability and the potential (still!) of blockchain technology.

Yeah. I think that's true of almost any big idea but what drew me to the question is that as a space we are terrible at answering questions like this for normies....So the way I would put it maybe is this is my opening sentence talking to a normie who says 'what's crypto' ...we need good clear opening sentences. 👊

Fully agree on that. Why I put it like this, is that I notice that I always get that "but what about the frauds and isn't it for criminals?". I think the challenge lies behind that opening line. Especially because a lot of the crypto scene is very deep into it. There's a huge gap to bridge. And, what I notice, is that for many "crypto" is Bitcoin, fraud and criminals. When you talk about smart contracts and the potential of that and how potentially you could proof your age (at a bar or casino or for renting a car), without revealing your social security number, suddenly their eyes start to glow. I love the example of the French appliances company @cxs recently shared, which can also easily be imagined for used cars. Those are the examples where the normies start geting it. The issue with the one-liner, I'm affraid, is that they might go "yeah... but it's still too much fraud and criminals".
