This is why the AfD lost to its political opponents. Many Germans wanted to vote for them but changed their minds. The AfD made a big mistake! They should not have talked about taking Germany out of the EU, especially during what many, especially older Germans, see as a crisis. The war in Ukraine, Germany’s economic decline, and the possible breakup of NATO made people worry. This was a perfect gift for their political opponents!

The AfD's policies are entirely based on nationalism, like the UK, they want Germany to be independent. why exactly did people want to vote for the AfD if they were against these policies?

What I mean is, why did they even want to vote for them in the first place? The AfD's positions haven’t been that unclear.

Usually it's because there's one issue that's important to the votes (in that case probably immigration issues) and they more or less accept the rest of the agenda, but if there happens to be another element that is too objectionable, then the whole package becomes unacceptable.
