I’ve been quieter than usual lately, as I was über-busy conducting airport inspections over multiple days. 13K steps per day instead of sitting in front of a laptop broke not only my casting habits, but my fitness ones, too. I’m sharing this as an excuse to say that I love airports. No, not the pitiful excuses like those found in the US or Europe. I’m talking about Asian airports, in all their chaotic neutral glory. Airports are the epitome of liminal spaces (as this picture taken today illustrates perfectly). A place between places. A rendezvous spot to connect and also part ways. A bridge between cultures, codes, and norms; only with underpriced retail, overpriced food, and an endless spectacle outside the windows for aviation geeks. Truly, what’s better than an airport?

A fellow airport aficionado! I would enjoy working at an airport. How did you get into your line of work in the first place?

Started working as a management consultant after graduation, and gravitated toward aerospace- and aviation-related projects by happenstance and then personal preference. After a few such projects, you start being branded as “the industry expert” internally and you get staffed on similar projects more and more. It snowballs from there and one day (2+ decades later), you wake up with a terminal degree (no pun intended) and multiple certifications in the field, a large network of industry contacts, and more work that you can stake a chick at (as Joan of Arc would say)
