I’m a fan of the network-state concept as much as the next guy here but how many people realize that no state will survive more than a few generations without the ability to physically defend itself? I’ve seen nobody talk about the need for a citizen-army or defense pacts with empires

100% agreed. Nation states are the dominant power structure now because they are the ones “allowed” to exert their dominion through violence. Network states will somehow need similar power.

without an army, network states are vulnerable to the jurisdiction their citizens reside in but as long as its -ev for the state to annoy them they should be fine. for example if the network state brings business to the country & its citizen can quickly relocate, then i assume they wouldn't interfere much
