it baffles me that macbooks still don't have 5G receivers why do i need to use my phone as a hotspot?

Meh, its just another sim you need then. Unless providers start rolling out same account / multiple esim plans I think we'll have to stick to tethering. I've never got tethering over usb-c to work on my Macbook to iPhone though. That is surely the best way.
