It's not pretty. 

It almost certainly doesn't work out by any actual ROI metric, but it might be a marketshare one (e.g. Blur).

would love to hear some anecdotal tales of ‘Airdrop Farmer Turned Loyal User’

I think that to have a long term retention after your airdrop is to tunnel the users to a Social/Social Fi app. 
That’s where you have a (multi) billion-dollar answer.
