The claim is the US pays the often stratospheric cost of new drug development. In reality, while the US does a lot of pharma research, so does Europe, and US research tends to follow US medical needs which often aren't universal. 

The Ozempic example is one where US healthcare is presumably subsidizing something.

Re: subsidizing healthcare, I never really understood this argument. What does American pharma R&D spending have to do with paying $30k for a day in the hospital?
