(Worlds are always ending. If you get anything out of reading history or anthropology, it should be that: it's always the apocalypse somewhere. What comes after each apocalypse may be better or worse, but nevertheless, it comes. Everything that is solid will one day melt into thin air, and nothing you value—the things you will miss, the smallest everyday details of life, your secret rituals and private jokes, the odd thoughts that cur and recur, those things of beauty not written in any book—none of that will survive on its own, will be lost and forgotten, and if you don't preserve it, probably no one else will either. You may not care about that, and that is your choice. Your time can be well-spent otherwise. But if you do, you should know that: worlds are already ending, and in an important sense, yours already has, it just takes a while.) 3 replies
