The most reliable way to get attention online is to leverage negative emotions, which are stickier than good ones. But this runs counter to existing in community, which needs etiquette and decorum from all participants to function. And so therein lies the tension

Very true. Another issue is that all attention online is rewarded equally whereas normally this is not the case in a community. We're essentially destroying the fabric of society just to sell more ads.
