what is the best way to peg a new erc20 token to an underlying onchain asset? say i have a rare nft, and want to give ownership of it to lowercase contributors over time is it better, worse, or are people indifferent to this vs say just minting a new, entirely unpegged, token with no underlying lore or history?

This sounds like nft fractionalization. There were some orgs really into it a few years ago like niftex and unicly but I think they're down now and not sure who's doing it currently. Also the SEC started commenting about it with regards to securities laws which might have spooked a few people.

Looks like the SEC dropped their case against Yuga, part of which was related to fractional NFTs afaik. Unclear if new platforms will emerge or if Zora's make all content coined will take over

That's the right decision and it was ludicrous that the SEC originally chose to pursue this in the first place, even if the NFT was fractionalised. This new paradigm of content ownership now has some breathing space to develop and mature and Zora could do well from it.
