If we took todays lens and ran it through people in the past 2000 years that have existed - there’s very close to no one that wouldn’t be cancelled - is my guess The audacity of wanting people to conform to a “moral compass” or appeal to some sort of liberal empathy is a very recent phenomena

“cancelling” has been going for the entirety of recorded history Some examples that come to mind - mob of Athens cancelling Socrates to his death - Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate cancelling Christians in favor of Neoplatonic Hellenism - Savonarola rallying Florence to cancel Lorenzo di Medici - and obvsly more

Athens had more than just persecuting Socrates. They official procedure for cancelling people - if the vote on ostrasization went against you, you had to get the hell out of dodge and you weren’t allowed to return to Athens for 10 years.

Oh yeah ostracism - fun fact about ostracism, ostraka literally means "broken shard" of a pottery piece that was used as a token during the voting period to literally vote people off the island. We had a manual Snapshot, thousands of years ago already
