Last night, a patient was really unstable. I tried hard to calm things down, looked for different ways to ease the tension, but it still escalated. He ended up throwing a chair at me, and I tried to handle the situation on my own. I totally wiped out trying to contain him. Result: a small cut on my forehead, some pain in my knee and shin, nothing serious. I had time to reflect afterward, to spot what went wrong. That kind of self-reflection is important, something we should do every day. I鈥檓 okay. The patient apologized, he realized he鈥檇 crossed a line. He鈥檚 now getting care that鈥檚 more suited to his state. I work in an intensive psych unit. We learn from our mistakes every day. And it鈥檚 important to do that kind of reflection in real life, not just in theory.

Yes, but I was with a temporary staff member who couldn鈥檛 handle the situation at any point , but it鈥檚 on me. We have a team of professionals who can step in quickly to manage complex situations, and I should have called them earlier.

That鈥檚 a difficult situation. It is a very challenging work. It is not easy to know the right time to call for help.
