Dubai (#2) is an interesting case study. The emirates invested heavily in connections to cities around the world, making it hyper-connected and allowing it to become a hub between Europe, Asia and Africa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_busiest_airports_by_passenger_traffic
