I was talking of HR zones to increase VO2 and pointed out that ppl with highest VO2 might not spend significant amount of time in Zone 3-4 and Zone 2 is more a comfortable way to get an OK number of VO2. Yes, elit athletes die early, but probably not due to high VO2 Max..

but the problem might be the inefficient calibration of these HR zones by the current wearables.. Attia has some other markers he uses for example to identify these zones.

but I'd be curious to see any study that compares the effect of Zone 2 vs Zone 3-4 on VO2 max. (thinking about a comparative study of 8-12 weeks) But imho the Zone 2 mania is more about minimum effective dose than max results.

on the highest VO2 max athletes you can find some materials here: https://www.topendsports.com/testing/records/vo2max.htm the other part is "anecdata" and personal experience. If you are sitting on an Erg or pumping a Ski Erg for 1-2h as an athlete you will not spend 80% of your time below 140-150 bpm

are there any proof to that? highest VO2 athletes are cross country skiers, rowers cyclists.. they spend hours in zone 3-4 each day.
