would you consider community as part of marketing?

it's unfortunately often part of it. The consequence are KPIs that don't always benefit long-term community building (not saying that marketing is all about short-term. A project benefits from a community thanks to - fewer customer support calls as members help each other - more sales because member sell to members - more users because members sell to non-members - better onboarding and education because members help members - fewer features that no-one cares about because members give feedback - fewer bugs because you can give members alpha access - more authentic content for marketing because members tell you their success stories so putting community under marketing works if the head of community can (ability + agency) interact with all the other units in the company that have a stake in the community
