group chats in telegram were never intended to be e2e encrypted. only direct private chats are.

exactly, yet I'm a little confused with your original cast. Just shared their response regarding the FAQ update. Since the article you shared is entirely based of it, and somehow assumes what it says in the title for whatever reason.
