Running a restaurant in New York might just be the hardest job in NY. I recently met with the kind team at Cheeky Sandwiches, who have been trying to open a location in Essex Market for over a year. Unfortunately, they’ve been unable to do so due to building violations at Essex Market—issues completely outside of their control. What’s particularly frustrating is that Essex Market is essentially owned and regulated by the City of New York, yet the building itself doesn’t meet the city’s own permit requirements. How does that even happen? When Cheeky Sandwiches finally reopens—hopefully in the new year—be sure to show them some love!

Essex Market has fumbled so many times over the last few years. Meanwhile Dekalb Market is thriving post-pandemic. Tough to see.
