I'm really proud that ethereum does not have any culture of trying to prevent people from speaking their minds, even when they have very negative feelings toward major things in the protocol or ecosystem. Some wave the ideal of "open discourse" as a flag, some take it seriously.

That's fair. Obviously the more decentralized the better. I will say tho the current US government is significantly more decentralized than Soviet Russia's government.

They "can". They are simply less likely to do so than the average rando conspiracy dude who makes deepfakes. It's still a better solution than no verification.
