Why are tesla vehicles not using auto pilot less likely to crash? Better drivers or better cars?

Tesla is a pretty new brand, and I imagine old cars play a big part in the american average. I'd guess premium brand collision avoidance isnt far off (not sure tesla leads but that makes sense) 

The thing that caught my eye with tesla when working at Mercedes was the branding of autopilot, semi autonomous piloting through construction zones already existed but it was called “distronic plus with steering lane assist”
