There's a very interesting fiasco playing out at Bluesky currently. For those not following, Bluesky is a social network based on a theoretically decentralized identity system (atproto). Practically, there's only 1 implementation and 1 app to interface it: Bluesky.

The idea is to migrate from a monolithic “builder” entity to a distributed building process, that doesn’t necessarily replace today’s actors so much as it lets them specialize, e.g. in searching, or more efficient merging techniques, which they can be paid for.
