2x2 of evolutionary regimes for complex systems I’m thinking of: convergence vs divergence, fragmentation vs consolidation The counterintuitive regimes are convergent fragmentation and divergent consolidation Convergent fragmentation is basically “crushing” regimes What is divergent consolidation?

For completeness Convergent consolidation is fusion Divergent fragmentation is explosion The emergence of the internet was an example of divergent consolidation. Everything exploded in variety and diversity, yet got more connected and entangled at the same time

The paranoid style is convergent fragmentation. Its adherents are part of a convergent narrative, but the specific day-to-day problems they attribute to the boogeymen have are incredibly fragmented, and the loss of life feedback due to every problem being a boogeyman leads to further fragmentation.
