Before Kandinsky, in the 19th century, Georgiana Houghton + Hilma af Klint developed their own abstract visual language. Emma Kunz followed in the 20th century. 

All three strove to visualize the laws of nature, the spiritual, & the supernatural. None were recognized during their lifetimes.

Georgiana Houghton practiced as a medium in Victorian London. She drew and painted as the channel for otherworldly beings she contacted in her séances.

Hilma af Klint was influenced by spiritualism and explored the immaterial contents of a higher plane of consciousness. She captured spiritual energies in symbolic works, resulting in organic abstractions and unusual combinations of color and form.

Kunz was recognized as a healer, she described herself as a researcher. Only now has she acquired an international reputation through her artistic work. 

She used the pendulum to create the incredible mechanical plots that we now know.
