It symbolizes the ultimate transformation or purification of substances toward a higher state of being.

This is the title page of the book in which I found the alchemical recipe. 

The book itself is part of the Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical manuscripts which was digitized by The Internet Archive. I don't have a link handy, but you should be able to track it down quite easily.
