i read this and need to go back and read more things on that site. lots of spinning thoughts about what's eaten culture, what next, etc. https://networkcultures.org/longform/2024/04/10/six-theses-towards-the-liberation-of-arts-philanthropy/

i think the art world has been troubled by these things for a long time but it seems to be getting more egregious as capitalism accelerates (╥_╥)

correct. so the question becomes imo: if its supervisible, can we actually create systems untethered by this BS, or is it fundamentally a human problem that'll keep recurring.

i don't know if it's a human problem but a capitalism problem. so i think as long as capitalism is the thing that underpins everything then it will probably keep recurring. the only escape is to forgo the privileges of the majority culture and operate on the fringes in minority culture (before it is subsumed and commodified by capitalism as well (╥_╥))

my issue is patronage (& artist frustration) pre-dates cap'lism. medici (banks-trade), churches & kings, etc. there is a power dynamic that keeps recurring. the question of what 'majority culture' even is rn causes my brain to jam, tho the tldr error message it throws is: trash. so, yes, nurturing the fringes, the outside, maintaining history and memory.

yeah the renaissance was sort of proto-capitalism and we've been trapped in that loop since (now we're even swinging back to oligarchical structures of that time (╥_╥)) there are stories of societies that exist outside of this system where the arts play a different, maybe more important or spiritual role in things but it's hard to verify the true degree with how we're conditioned to see things from the system we're in the idea of an avant garde was supposed to counter things like artwashing and reinforcing the power dynamics but with how powerful capitalism has become, everything just gets co-opted and recuperated, rendering everything trash
