I’m doing more normie interviews (e.g. ABC, Bloomberg, etc.) now and I’m trying to get non-crypto people excited about crypto apps they might be using in the next 2-5 years. Obvious ones I use are stablecoins, NFTs for tickets, opening up gaming economies. But what are some others I should be highlighting?

Stating the obvious here lol but social media! Farcaster and other blockchain based social networks solve the problems inherent to existing, corporate social media platforms- Difficultly balancing free speech and censorship, prioritizing corporate interests over those of their users, and not allowing the creators who are generating all the value for these platforms to own their audience or their content. When users own their identity and social graph, social network lock in goes away, so apps (like warpcast) have to work harder to retain users.

To play devils advocate, I don’t think non-crypto-folks care about this that much. Compare it to buying concert tickets. Saving the ~30% fee tax is motivating to anyone, they don’t need to buy into any decentralization philosophy.

Forget the decentralization and blockchain. Talk to a creator with an audience on TikTok (for example), and ask them what they will do if the algorithm changes and they suddenly lose their engagement, traffic and eyeballs on their content. Ask them if they would be happy if when they left TikTok and when they opened an account on let’s say instagram, they didn’t have to rebuild their following bc their social graph is portable from app to app. Ask them how they feel about the take rates on current platforms and if they would rather a world where the apps are forced to share more revenue with creators, bc when switching costs go down, apps must compete for users. To be fair, this doesn’t exist at all today. It’s an ideal distant vision but one that farcaster can help create. And it’s why I show up here everyday to do my part to will it into existence ✊💜 And lastly, I’m a huge fan of devils and their advocates so thank you for pushing back on my Farcaster maxi bias 🙏 🙏

Okay I like that framing much more. I have a decent TikTok / Instagram audience so I know this pain well. X has done a good job of proving that a platform can share its revenues directly with creators, and crypto rails would certainly facilitate that. I also desperately wish I had a single ID (like nateliason.eth) all my social media profiles could connect to so if someone found me one place they could immediately find me in the others, it would make audiences more portable and make it easier to get started on new networks. Though, existing networks aren’t incentivized to allow that… definitely some conflicting interests there.
