DevOps is about increasing the speed at which you can ship code, get feedback, iterate, and ship again. The more complex and volatile our world gets (and I believe volatility will keep increasing), the more important a devops mindset and associated skills become.

I’ve really only played in the spaces where CI/CD pipelines rule everything and where Dev/ML Ops are a loose set of rules What has it looked more like for you in the past?

Consider yourself lucky! I spent my first years before git or cloud (as we know it) existed everything was quite manual. And then spent a decade at a SaaS company whose main code base was written in the early 2000s, and we modernized it by: Breaking down the monolith into microservices Moving from onprem data center to AWS Automating the commit to deploy pipeline Moving from quarterly releases to daily It took years and years, and we never “finished”, lots of distractions along the way in the form of M&A It was a difficult but rewarding journey, seeing over time how code quality increased, developer happiness increased, customers got features sooner etc
