i see folks talking about getting less engagement & being disappointed

you might not be getting less engagement, you're just getting *notified* less often!

what if we reconsidered this & looked at it from a different perspective? how can this change our relationship with social networks & identity?

I think the change in the notification system coincided with an overall degradation of system performance so people may very well have gotten less engagement but not because of the changes to notifications.

I was thinking it would reduce new user retention since their replies will got to a different folder and not be noticed. So they have to work a lot harder to get attention and churn

Your own engagement on any given tweet at this time of day vs. tn is probably a pretty good proxy.
