As Gladiator 2 continues to open world wide, it's worth remembering that that Russel Crow originally commissioned musician Nic Cave to write the sequel. It would have been bat-shit crazy in the most entertaining of ways. If you're up for it, you can read it here: https://davidgerard.co.uk/gladiator-2-nick-cave.pdf

The world deserves this version to be made! I love the power accrued by actors, that become stars, that then can command the direction and production of the films they are in. Sort of like "founder talent" but with it's own flavour. In fact, this has fascinated me for a while - the actor, using nothing more than their body and wit, throws themselves at impossible odds, and are worth nothing in the beginning, desperate to get a job, and competing in a glamorous industry against extreme levels of comparable talent also throwing themselves at the same wall. THEN something happens, a job is booked, a success is clocked, & part of the success if the physical manifestation of that actors body/breath/soul... their stock instantly goes up. When this flowers fully, you get talent like Crowe being able to call shots at the production level, of course, the example above is this didn't get made, but not the point - Crow is totally at this level - working with Ridley in far deeper ways than just "hired cattle".
