I once had to evacuate my family home in the middle of the night due to a wildfire when I was a kid. Firefighters had come to rescue us at the end of a cul-de-sac as the fire was closing in from all directions. Lifelong memory etched into my brain. I weep for all our LA friends here

I can only imagine how terrifying that must’ve been. How old were you when it happened?

Probably 5 or 6 — I didn’t fully realize then what was happening, my parents woke me up and it all happened very quickly.

Crazy how trauma imprints itself on the brain. Not comparable to your situation, but I remember seeing a car crash around that age, and my memory of it was if it was happening in slow motion. Many years later I learned that when you experience a high stress moment the brain enters a heightened state of awareness, which leads to increased memory encoding resulting in more vivid memories.
