I once had to evacuate my family home in the middle of the night due to a wildfire when I was a kid.

Firefighters had come to rescue us at the end of a cul-de-sac as the fire was closing in from all directions.

Lifelong memory etched into my brain.

Crazy how trauma imprints itself on the brain. 
Not comparable to your situation, but I remember seeing a car crash around that age, and my memory of it was if it was happening in slow motion. 
Many years later I learned that when you experience a high stress moment the brain enters a heightened state of awareness, which leads to increased memory encoding resulting in more vivid memories.

Probably 5 or 6 — I didn’t fully realize then what was happening, my parents woke me up and it all happened very quickly.
