I have a soft spot for vintage mid-century modern construction toys. The best ones don't veer too far off the art object track. Magnet Master was designed by Arthur A. and Reno J. Carrara and was sponsored by the Walker Art Center, 1948

I get the sense that this would still fly off the shelves in museum gift shops, and be a popular seller in general with more awareness.

100%. I do believe there are things like this on the market but as expected nowhere nearly as well made as they were back then.
