Asahi Shuzo (yes, the maker of Asahi beer) is trying to make sake on the International Space Station (ISS). Would sake made in space taste different from that made on Earth? How about sake made on the Moon using the Moon's water? https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/12/science/sake-space-japan-launch-intl-hnk/index.html

This time capsule at Oglethorpe University (Atlanta, GA), is scheduled to be opened on May 28, 8113 (yes, 8113). If you could add an item now, what would you choose? It will be opened 6000 years later. https://youtu.be/kj-89i-ZV4g?si=3Fr4XVsxyDpYTE_e

We may soon see some animals that can photosynthesize as well. Researchers from Japan have successfully transplanted chloroplasts into animal cells, observing a significant initial response to photosynthesis. https://phys.org/news/2024-10-solar-powered-animal-cells-combining.html

World's First Fully Automated Dental Procedure on a Human with AI-Driven Robotic System. According to Perceptive, their robots can complete crown placement in just 15 minutes, significantly reducing the current method, which requires two office visits of at least one hour each. https://www.perceptive.io/

Thermal facial image analysis reveals age and disease. As we age, the nose area becomes colder and the eye area becomes hotter. Interestingly, jumping rope more than 800 times a day for 2 weeks reduced thermal facial aging. https://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/fulltext/S1550-4131(24)00188-8

Allan Doctor (University of Maryland) and Hiromi Sakai (Nara University, Japan) are competing to create a single artificial blood that can be used for all blood types. Doctor’s product (ErythroMer) has successfully completed animal testing, while Sakai’s product has already been tested in a few humans.

Freezing bread can be a healthier habit. According to this article (see my reply) and a cited paper within it, the level of resistant starch (which is harder to digest and thus controls insulin/glucose levels better) was higher in the order of 1) freeze/thawed, 2) toasted, 3) untreated white bread.

Frozen human brain tissue can now be revived without damage. Note that it's not a whole brain. Still very interesting. https://www.cell.com/cell-reports-methods/fulltext/S2667-2375(24)00121-8?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2667237524001218%3Fshowall%3Dtrue

Robert Liston (1794-1847) was a respected surgeon known for his swift and precise surgical skills. He could amputate a leg in less than 30 seconds, while others took 2-3 minutes. This speed was essential for reducing pain and improving the odds of survival for patients in an era before the advent of anesthesia.

well, it might be simple terms for his standard, but it could be like a foreign language to people in other fields. :-)

We spent lots of time and energy to get into a college. Ironically, it's during our time in college that we learn how to learn independently. I think that's why several great minds have dropped out early from college — they have already mastered how to perform independent study. What you you think?
