Also because the idea of "used space" makes it so much more relatable. The concept of "used space" refers to objects, clothing, structures and star ships, all exhibiting wear and tear and constantly breaking down (from an interview with George Lucas, long before the age of internet). Until the premier of Star Wars episode IV in 1977, all scifi shows featured pristine spaces, clothing and items. Star Wars made it real.
