I disagree, the Ethereum ecosystem's approach since 2015 has always been to both (1) continuously improve Ethereum itself as a platform for apps and users, and (2) build great things, even though we know Ethereum isn't "finished" yet. 

That said I do agree with the sentiment that the lack of onchain privacy is a huge limitation.
