Increasing the decentralization of the Ethereum network means increasing the number of 'node operators' on the network. This means having individuals/groups running a full node with 1+ validators attached to it. You can either do this solo (w/ 32 ETH), as a group with tech like DVT, or with a pool like Rocket Pool.

How important (for decentralization) is it to have a validator attached to it?

I tend to think of it as a validator being a combo of: 1) home execution node -> decentralized execution -> censorship resistance of network access 2) home consensus node -> decentralized consensus -> censorship resistance of network state Those without 32 ETH can still do #1
