Stani’s shift from “decentralization” to “resilient” social networks is a pragmatic move,  It resonates with Jacob’s idea of an unstoppable “hyperstructure”, emphasizing building strong, self-sustaining systems that can withstand disruptions and function under centralized pressure.

I hope more projects recognize this importance, as it lays the foundation for creating future-proof applications, protocols or ecosystems that continue to deliver value despite challenges. This requires proactive planning, focusing not only on technical resilience but also on community and governance structures.

While rare now, such projects may become the norm in the future.

Farcaster

I can answer part of this, but some aspects are uncertain.

If the EU 'bans' Farcaster, they can only ban the client, like removing Warpcast from app stores or blocking its network. People could still use other clients built on Farcaster. but since most registered via Warpcast without backing up their mnemonic phrases, it’s unclear if they can smoothly switch to other clients.

Can governments shut it down? Farcaster allows permissionless registration. Identity data is stored on-chain and can’t be blocked, and content data is distributed across off-chain hubs. So it’s unlikely to be shut down.

If the Farcaster founders are arrested, no one would lead Warpcast development (though alternatives remain) or update the Farcaster protocol. It’s unclear if the community could continue upgrades or, in the worst case, fork a new version based on existing data.

It makes sense, protocols and infrastructure should provide the conditions for applications to be resilient, so they are inherently resilient without needing to focus on resilience separately.

Szabo said it well many years ago that decentralization is a tool to achieve a secure, resilient network. 

Protocols like Ethereum have long-time built against single points of failure (though some remain, and others don’t even care..).

Different protocols need to be resilient to different attack vectors too.

Apps should rather reduce points of failure (like unnecessary TVL) instead of focusing mainly on resilience imho.
