Austin was great when it was the only liberal and cultural oasis in TX, back when that meant something. When it was a Texas-sized college town. SXSW created a reality distortion field for tourists looking for the Good Life and since then they’ve been trying to graft a tech hub on top of a place that was never suited.

Have been listening to this take since I moved here in 2005 and it was bullshit then and it's bullshit now... No disrespect meant. I've moved around and come back. Austin is still a place with chill people. It's still a place teeming with artists/musicians. It's just now the whole world knows about us.

Hot, expensive, sprawling. More ramen restaurants tho, much culture, very progress. What’s Austin’s greatest cultural export in the last 10 years.

Why the arbitrary 10 years? ACL (est 2002) and SXSW (1987) have been growing in prominence since inception. The only thing to really set them back was the pandemic (esp sxsw). It takes a lot of time to establish institutions like this. Would rather do ACL than Coachella. Sprawl is America and less bad in ATX than HTX.
