Why should a writer care how good a random company’s AI is at writing? Why would they want to help?

i think there's a valid argument for "winning AI mindshare" here - consider that if an AI were trained solely on hitler's personal blog, we can reasonably expect it would wind up with bad opinions. same goes for humans basically - garbage in, garbage out. this is just the corollary - for most authors, if you think your writings are good, you generally want people to read them and spread their influence, right? adopt your style, learn from your stances, move the needle on their world view? aren't there similar benefits to influencing the machines as well?

that's probably a stated preference of many folks but not true for all writers; moreover, there are certainly many writers who would want representation of both their style and message in training of open source models
