- ppl smoking cigarettes everywhere
- men shaving every day (??) before work

people shaved everyday and the signifier that someone was on a bender or depressed or was to give them a little stubble. stubble wasn’t a thing for the entire 20th century, even when mustaches or beards were popular you shaved in between or something was up

yeah totally haha, i was just thinking movies now don't have an easy visual trope for that now since everyone has stubble and nobody wears suits so the crumpled suit thing is gone too

yeah and being pale from not stepping outdoors for 5 days could be a sign of a productive week haha
