TIL. Treadmills were originally invented in 1817 by English engineer William Cubitt as punishment devices for prisoners. Called "treadwheels" at the time, these machines were designed to be instruments of penal labor and reformation in British prisons, forcing inmates to walk for hours as a form of punishment and hard labor
