The 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden organized by the German American Bund took place on February 20, 1939, drawing 20,000 supporters in a spectacle that mimicked Nazi gatherings in Germany complete with swastikas and fascist salutes. The event framed Nazi ideology as patriotic Americanism with a massive George Washington banner flanked by swastikas. Fritz Kuhn the Bund’s leader delivered anti Semitic and pro fascist speeches while outside thousands of anti fascist protesters clashed with police. Inside Jewish protester Isadore Greenbaum was violently subdued when he tried to disrupt the event. The rally highlighted the presence of Nazi sympathizers in the U.S. but also faced strong opposition. Soon after Kuhn was convicted of embezzlement and the Bund collapsed as World War II began with many members arrested or interned.
