It's unfortunate that "minting" ever became a popular term, just call it what it is in context: buying, collecting, tipping, etc.

People say "mint" when they really mean "save to the blockchain", a byproduct of early adopters in the space caring too much about the tech and not enough about the benefits

NFTs are just digital receipts, calling the action of acquiring them "minting" is like saying "I saved something to the Visa database" instead of "I bought something"

Agreed that it's "technically correct" but I think it makes more sense to be "contextually correct" here so that users can be clear on *what they're doing* rather than how it works especially given that tokens are a core primitive of blockchains and the word "mint" will only become more overloaded with time

for me, it's the same as collecting or tipping. those concepts were introduced for the first time for a specific use case. with mints, it's the same

it's a new action that people will do on the internet. you don't need to explain it; it's a new mechanism

'i've sent you a snap,' 'let's take a bereal,' 'i posted a story'... those were new concepts that are now part of our daily life

That's contradictory: collecting and tipping are both done via "minting" which is my point, it's better to just call those actions "collecting" and "tipping"

have been thinking, for most minting, maybe the value is in the kinetic action of minting, not in the post-mint "state of ownership"

This is under the assumption that all NFTs are “things”, which I think might not necessarily true even if this is how we have thought of them (ie minting is a cyberspriritual kinetic momentary act of signaling resonance, rather than Collecting An Object)

I think minting is also becoming tipping in many cases since most people don't ever look back on the NFTs that they've collected (wallets are a junk drawer, especially since anyone can just send you shit) so in that case it's more about "the act of minting" as a tip or token of appreciation to the creator, the NFT that you receive in return doesn't really matter, in that case it mostly serves as a digital receipt of your tip

why would you associate minting with tipping? 

on collecting, totally agree, there's a mix of "collect nd mint" without a clear logic behind
