The shifts in how we socialize online over the past few years have been fascinating to watch. Some that stick out to me:
1. Public feeds → private chats, raw thoughts often too risky to share on the timeline or sense that no one will see it unless it's engagement bait (have felt this shift the most on X, RIP Twitter)
2. Consume content solo → DM to friends, often with little to no context, implicit "this made me think of you" or "I think you'd like this", sometimes they react or reply, maybe you talk about it later
3. Passively aware of what everyone is up to (curated version), whether they're a close friend or an influencer you follow, we know more about what people are doing but maybe less about how they're thinking or really feeling?
4. Algos everywhere, we swipe and scroll through feeds never knowing what comes next (friend? influencer? ad?), death of the follower (s/o Jack Conte), sometimes can't even remember who posted what
5. Dehumanization of content, comment culture is wild, 4th wall broken 1 reply
