We're raising our son trilingual (English, Japanese, Mandarin), living in Okinawa, Japan. My wife and I speak Japanese and English with each other, 2yo speaks Japanese at daycare, English with me, and Mandarin with Mom and Grandma. Definitely took longer than other kids to start, but It somehow seems to be working.

This is so awesome! Mandarin and Japanese are notoriously not easy languages to learn. Fun fact, I've tried to get into a joint Japanese-Mandarin language degree in the UK π emphasis on tried

Oh no, I wish. I wanted to major in Japanese (just after high school, the joint degree idea came later) but it didn't work out, so it's English (please don't judge me, I feel my grammar is garbage now). My mother tongue is Lithuanian, then English and decent Russian (tho that grammar is tough). Bits and pieces of Spanish and Japanese.
