The Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act makes it an offense to stir up hatred with threatening or abusive behavior on the basis of characteristics including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity. Racial hatred was already banned under a law dating from 1986.

“The threshold of criminality in terms of the new offenses is very, very high indeed,” First Minister Humza Yousaf said. “Your behavior has to be threatening or abusive and intended to stir up hatred.”

And JK Rowling can do what she wants but the focus here isn’t on free speech. It’s that people can be assholes to people and have zero consequences.

There are always consequences to speech just not from the gov. Businesses can choose to terminate your employment, friends and loved ones can choose to leave you behind. But the gov should not have the power to put you in prison for being an asshole. Its Orwellian, they can put you in a box for private text messages.

Please give me a list of people in jail in the “west” for speech. This is what no one realizes. A law is a law. But a jury still will try you. We don’t live in a dictatorship. Unless people keep voting for the right.
