The Church is one of the best examples of a network state. A distributed organization with shared values, that owned property and was able to collected taxes (tithes) from its members. Are network states in part an attempt at filling the void left by a lack of religion in the western world?

I think politics is filling the religion-less void Network states more an answer to increasing failure of geographic and “chance via birth” lottery based governments to meet their citizen’s needs.

But in the past, the church has fulfilled social services that weren’t adequately provided by the government. It acted as a services provider and a builder of community, both of which seem to be focuses of current network state discussions (in the absence of a truly sovereign network state without a neocolonial bent).
