Our local school district was looking for parent volunteers to join a committee to put together recommendations for cell phone usage at schools. I joined specifically to take the pro-tech angle. I worry about organizations being so fearful of new technology that they ban things out of fear. I'd rather see us learn how to use technology in healthy ways and teach our kids healthy habits. After several meetings, I completely reversed my stance and ended up joining the side that recommended **no devices during school hours**. Few things stuck with me: -Counselors and teachers saying how quiet the lunch room and hallways are b/c everyone on phones. Kids aren't learning social skills. - The "I need it in case of an emergency" reasoning feeds into anxiety. We aren't letting kids sit with discomfort. - My school district is doing a great job integrating tech into curriculum, everyone gets a device, they're using AI, etc. They can use their phones every other second of the day.
